Pat Lennon is a Founder at Balto Design LLC based in Seattle, Washington, United States, North America. A passion for understanding and helping people came from my dad (the psychologist), my analytical nature from my mom (the accountant), and my need to take things apart—figure out how they work and make them better—could be a genetic anomaly. I’m not satisfied with the status quo; creating new products and processes to deliver better ones—products that improve people’s lives—is what motivates me. I learned the basics of product development (research, design, and prototyping) from generous mentors while working at the international NGO PATH, where we developed new global health technologies. While PATH was a rich learning environment, we didn’t manufacture the products we designed. I felt a strong need to master the entire product development process—from concept to production—to realize my goal of creating truly great products. To gain world-class production and management experience, I joined Microsoft’s Hardware Operations group. I was fortunate to work with a highly experienced team pioneering new approaches in high-volume manufacturing. This provided a fantastic learning opportunity, with rapid product development cycles that accelerated my growth. I eventually transitioned back to Microsoft’s hardware design side, supporting new product launch teams from a manufacturing perspective and taking on several project management roles. These roles sharpened my ability to meet aggressive launch deadlines. In my first management position, I found that my technical expertise, interest in people, and desire for better processes came together to build a strong foundation for managing and leading teams to consistently design outstanding products. When I decided to leave Microsoft and rejoin PATH, my goal was to apply my product development, process, and management experience to deliver life-changing, life-saving products to those most in need. Working with dedicated and smart colleagues, we developed and introduced a series of life-saving health products that scaled successfully in the world’s most challenging markets.
