Kelton Cullenberg is a Owner/Founder at Steady State Performance Physical Therapy based in Portland, Maine, United States, North America. I founded Steady State Performance Physical Therapy in 2020 to help runners throughout Maine and New England. While learning a lot during my 3.5 years working as a Physical Therapist in a high-volume orthopedic/sports insurance-based clinic, I knew that being trapped in the insurance healthcare model prevented me from using the majority of my skillset. I didn't become a Physical Therapist to see 2 patients at once, all day long, and be up until 11pm every night catching up on notes. I wanted to be a running specialist & be able to spend as much time as I could with each patient, as runners (& their injuries) are very complex. Starting Steady State had been my life's dream since high school. Within 7 months my wife Ashten joined me full time. Fast forward a couple years, and we have an awesome team of like-minded running PTs: 2 more in-person and 1 virtually. I've thoroughly enjoyed helping other clinicians find their dream job, and strive to create a growth & team-oriented work culture. Every day I wake up excited to continue to grow Steady State. In 2024 we expanded our virtual services and built the Find Your Steady State training app for runners & coaches. I was raised by a family of educators, and I'm driven to change the narrative around running-related injury advice, which is so often centered around negativity: "just stop running" and "your running form is the problem" are damaging to the longevity of runners who receive this advice without knowing better. Running injuries are always multifactorial, and the only way to fully resolve them is to take an holistic approach to the runner's training & recovery, which includes considering the runner's relationship with exercise, why they run, and other social & psychological influences. This type of education is less likely to go viral, limiting it's reach compared to overly-simplified explanations and solutions that don't address the root cause of injuries. My dream is to find a way for runners around the world to have easy access to optimistic running education so that they can live their fullest life, as being able to run helps us have better mental health, physical health, and relationships.
